Implant Supported Dentures

Middletown dentist explains implant-supported dentures, a popular type of tooth replacement

Missing multiple teeth can make a person lose confidence in their smile, struggle with eating and speaking, and experience negative oral health effects. Implant-supported dentures are a popular type of tooth replacement for restoring your smile that blends the stability of dental implants with the affordability and function of dentures. At Titus Dentistry, we offer implant-supported dentures for residents in the Middletown area, with the goal of re-establishing the function, health, and appearance of your smile.

What are Implant-Supported Dentures?

Implant-supported dentures are a terrific option available for replacing multiple missing teeth. They consist of a combination of two prosthetics: dentures (which serve as the replacement teeth) and a few strategically placed implants (which function like a tooth root to keep your teeth securely in place). Compared to traditional dentures, implant-supported dentures give patients an enhanced feeling of stability. These dentures are commonly used for the lower jaw since regular dentures are more prone to slipping out of place on the lower jaw. With good oral hygiene, implant-supported dentures are very long-lasting and durable.

Advantages of Implant-Supported Dentures

  • Look and feel natural
  • Prevent jawbone tissue loss
  • Oral hygiene is no different from natural teeth
  • No adjustment period
  • Prevent natural teeth from shifting in the mouth

Implant-Supported Dentures Procedure

Before oral surgery, the team at Titus Dentistry must confirm that your jawbone tissue is healthy enough to support the dental implants. If not, you might need to receive a bone graft prior to having your implants placed.

The number of implants that are placed will depend on the number of teeth missing and the condition of your other oral structures. Typically, four to eight implants are placed in each affected arch. After the implants are surgically placed in your jawbone, they will fuse into your jawbone and act as artificial tooth roots. This process is called osseointegration. The recovery time from the surgery can range from three to six months.

Once osseointegration has occurred, and the tissues have healed, a small connecting piece called an abutment is attached to the implant. Custom-made dentures are then secured and attached to the implants.
