TMJ Therapy

If You Suffer from TMD Discomfort, Consider Oral Appliance Therapy for Relief

If you experience pain or discomfort in your face, neck, or jaw area, it could be due to your temporomandibular joint or TMJ. Your TMJ connects your jaw to your skull, and when put under constant stress, it can become strained and inflamed. While there are several treatment options you could consider for TMJ dysfunction, including at-home jaw exercises, medication, and even surgery in extreme cases, many patients are getting great results with the use of custom bite splints offered by Dr. Jonathan Titus and the team at Titus Dentistry in Middletown. Indiana.

Patients See Great Results with Oral Appliance Therapy

One very common reason many people develop TMD is due to untreated bruxism, or the chronic grinding and clenching of their teeth and jaw. Bruxism puts undue strain on your TMJ, but it can be alleviated with the use of an oral appliance. Custom bite splints are a great way to eliminate pain and discomfort brought on by bruxism and TMD. This form of treatment is becoming so popular because it is a drug-free and non-invasive method for treating both bruxism and TMD.

These oral appliances are designed to:

  • Relieve jaw joint pressure. A custom-crafted night guard/oral appliance is designed to reduce the force being applied to the jaw joint, which in turn will reduce stress and strain on your jaw
  • Prevent damage from teeth grinding. An oral appliance is designed to protect your teeth from damage due to nighttime bruxism. It will also help reduce the amount of clenching you are doing while sleeping
  • Treat your TMD symptoms quickly. Therapy that utilizes an oral appliance will often yield results within a few months
  • Stabilize and prevent future symptoms of TMD. Once you wear your mouth splints/oral appliance long enough for your TMD to stabilize, it can not only relieve current symptoms but also prevent them from reoccurring in the future
