Dental Implant Placement – Post-Op Instructions
Home » Dental Implant Placement – Post-Op Instructions
- Dental implants require controlled healing for the bone to integrate with the implant surface. Follow all instructions carefully to support stable osseointegration.
- Bite on gauze for 30–45 minutes. Some oozing is normal. Do not spit, smoke, vape, or use straws for 24 hours.
- Antibiotics may be prescribed; take as directed. Use anti-inflammatory medication for soreness unless contraindicated. Swelling peaks at 48–72 hours. Use ice for the first day, then switch to warm compresses if needed.
- Keep the site clean but undisturbed. Do not brush the surgical area for 7 days. Instead, use an antimicrobial rinse as directed. Brush and floss all other areas as you normally would. Avoid allowing electric toothbrushes to contact the surgical site during the early healing phase.
- Eat a soft diet for several days. Chew on the opposite side. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods. Do not wear removable dentures over the implant site until you have been cleared to do so.
- A small metal healing cap may be visible; do not touch or tighten it. If it loosens, call the office immediately.
- Avoid heavy physical activity for 72 hours. Continue avoiding smoking throughout the healing phase—smoking increases implant failure risk.
- Expect mild bruising, jaw tightness, and slight discomfort when opening your mouth. This resolves gradually.
- Long-term success requires strict oral hygiene and consistent recall visits every 3–6 months. Call if swelling increases after day three, if pus or foul taste develops, or if the healing abutment becomes loose.
