Can I Have All My Teeth Removed and Replaced with Implants?

Whether your teeth are already missing or removed due to severe decay, injury, or gum disease, you can’t just live with large gaps in your smile. At Titus Dentistry in Middletown, Indiana, we recommend filling those gaps with dental implants. Implant restorations look and function like natural teeth, making them a great asset for living a full and active life. With full mouth dental implants, Dr. Jonathan Titus can rebuild your entire smile!

Below, we provide answers to some of the most common questions about implants:

What are dental implants?

Implants are small, titanium posts that dentists use to replace lost tooth roots. The implants will be surgically placed inside your jaw where they will, over time, integrate with your bone tissue to become a permanent part of your jaw. Once the osseointegration process is complete, Dr. Titus will use the implants as a secure platform for supporting your new teeth.

How many teeth can implants replace?

Implants can be used to replace as many teeth as you need, from one or two to your entire smile or any number of missing teeth in between.

What are my options for implant restorations?

Implant dentistry offers various options for replacing lost teeth to give your smile a seamless, natural appearance. To replace distinct missing teeth, Dr. Titus will pair single implants with dental crowns. Multi-tooth implants are used to support a fixed bridge. If you’re having all your teeth removed and replaced by implants, your best option is full mouth dental implants. This entails the use of four or six implants to secure an entire arch of upper or lower teeth.

How long does the implant process take?

That depends on the complexity of your treatment. In some cases, the surgery itself can be completed in one dental visit. Multiple visits will be needed if you need tooth extraction or bone grafting before your implant surgery. Once the implants are in place, there’s a 3 – 9 month waiting period for the osseointegration process to complete. It’s only after the implants heal that we can attach permanent restorations to finalize your procedure.

Is implant surgery painful?

No. You’ll be given a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable during your procedure. We also offer dental sedation for those who need it. Once the anesthetic wears off, your mouth may be sore for a few days. You can use OTC or prescription medication to relieve painful symptoms.

How long do implants last?

With good oral care, titanium implants can last indefinitely. Your commitment to care for the implants and your new teeth will contribute to their longevity. Like natural teeth, implants need daily brushing and flossing to stay strong and healthy. You’ll also need to keep up with routine dental checkups and cleanings.
